Is growing food for bio-fuels violating human rights?

“In a world overflowing with riches, it is a outrageous scandal that more than 826 ¬†million people suffer hunger and malnutrition and that every year over 36 million die of starvation and related causes . We must take urgent action now.”

— Jean Ziegler, April 2001, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food

Google Public Policy Blog: Our commitment to open broadband platforms

According to the post on Google blog google is willing to write a $4.6 billion dollars cheque to the FCC to encourage open and sustained competition of the broad band internet service. Google has outlined a four paths to promote competition, the are:

  • ¬†Open applications: consumers should be able to download and utilize any software applications, content, or services they desire;
  • Open devices: consumers should be able to utilize their handheld communications device with whatever wireless network they prefer;
  • Open services: third parties (resellers) should be able to acquire wireless services from a 700 MHz licensee on a wholesale basis, based on reasonably nondiscriminatory commercial terms; and
  • Open networks: third parties (like Internet service providers) should be able to interconnect at any technically feasible point in a 700 MHz licensee’s wireless network.

Participatory economy, an offshoot of open-sourcing and co-creation

Nespresso, a Nestle SBU, invites it’s consumers to come participate in their production process, to that consumers’ can share and participate in the experience of sustainable coffee production. I think co-production will continue to grow as a trend.

My First Episode of New Heroes

I have been very excited about PBS series called the New Heroes, however I havent been able to catch it on TV till today. I am watching my first episode of New Heroes as I am blogging this.
This episode is the power of Enterprise and features the following entrepreneurs:  Albina Ruiz, of Ciudad Saludable,  Maria Teresa Leal, of Coopa-Roca,  and the world famous Muhammad Yunus, of Grameen Bank.
I hope and urge anyone and everyone interested in free enterprise (real free enterprise) to watch this.

Social entrepreneurs | PBS

PBS has a new program coming up on Social entrepreneurism.

"The New Heroes tells the dramatic stories of fourteen daring social entrepreneurs who are undaunted by the chronic challenges of poverty, illness, unemployment, violence and ignorance they see in the world around them. These individuals have a revolutionary passion for identifying and solving large-scale social problems. Unlike traditional business entrepreneurs, their mission is to generate social value, not wealth. For social entrepreneurs, the bottom line is measured in lives."
